Indications:

(injection): Short-term treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms, especially gram-negative bacteria; adjunct to systemic gentamicin in serious CNS infections ;(ophthalmic): treatment of superficial ocular infections ; (topical): treatment of primary (eg, impetigo contagiosa) and secondary (eg, infectious eczemafoid dermatitis) skin infections; skin cysts and superficial skin infections, infection prophylaxis, and aid to healing .

Contraindications:

(injection): Long-term therapy , (ophthalmic):epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella, mycobacterial infections, fungal diseases ; hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides.

Adverse reactions:

(Injection):CNS: Headache; dizziness; vertigo; encephalopathy; confusion; fever; lethargy; convulsions; muscle weakness and twitching; peripheral neuropathy; acute organic brain syndrome; depression; pseudotumor cerebri; increased CSF protein; arachnoiditis or burning at injection site after intrathecal administration Dermatologic: Rash; urticaria; itching; anaphylaxis Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat: Blurred vision; tinnitus; hearing loss Gastrointestinal: Nausea; vomiting Genitourinary: Oliguria; proteinuria; increased serum creatinine and BUN; casts; Fanconi-like syndrome Hematologic: Anemia; eosinophilia; leukopenia; thrombocytopenia; granulocytopenia Hepatic: Elevated liver function test results Respiratory: Apnea; pulmonary fibrosis Other: Pain and irritation at injection site; splenomegaly; hypomagnesemia; hyponatremia; hypocalcemia; hypokalemia.

Interactions:

Amphotericin B, Heparin, Sulfadiazine, Cephalotin, Cloxacillin, since the topical application of Gentamicin with those agents may cause obvious and apparent precipitation in the conjunctival sac.

Warnings:

(Ophthalmic):The use of contact lenses should be avoided during the period of administrating Gentamicin eye drops, benzalkonium chloride may cause hyper sensitivity in the eye in some patients.(Topical): It is not used for children under one year of age. When treating impetigo the crusts should be removed before applying the cream or the ointment.
