Indications:

1- Bone and joint infections, caused by staphylococci. 2- Gynecological infections, caused by anaerobes. 3- Intra-abdominal infections, caused by anaerobes. 4- Lower respiratory tract infections (Pneumonia) caused by anaerobes, pneumococci, stapylococci, streptococci. 5- Septicemia, caused by streptococci and staphylococci. 6- Skin and soft tissue infections, caused by anaerobes, streptococci and staphylococci.

Contraindications:

is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to preparations containing clindamycin or lincomycin.

Adverse reactions:

Gastro intestinal tract: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Haematopoietic: Transient neutropenia (leucopenia), eosinophilia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia. Skin and mucous membranes: Pruritus, vaginitis, exfoliative and vesiculobullous dermatitis (rare). Hypersensitivity reactions: Maculopapular rash, urticaria, erythema multiforme (rare), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (rare), anaphylactoid reactions. Liver: Jaundice, abnormalities in liver function tests. Cardiovascular: cardiopulmonary arrest (rare), hypotension (rare). Local reactions: Local irritation, pain, abscess formation (IM injection), thrombophlebitis (IV injection).

Interactions:

Neuromuscular blocking agents: May potentiate action of these drugs.Use together cautiously. Erythromycin or Chloramphenicol: May act as an antagonist, blocking clindamycin from reaching its site of action. Monitor patient for drug effect. Antimyasthenics: May antagonize the effect of antimyasthenics on skeletal muscle. Opioid (narcotic) analgesics: Possibly leading to increased or prolonged respiratory depression or paralysis ( apnea).

Warnings:

Clindamycin should not be given to patients hypersensitive to it. Clindamycin should be withdrawn immediately if significant diarrhea or colitis occurs. Patient with hepatic or renal impairment may require dosage adjustment. Caution is required during parentral use in neonates, since parentral formulations contain benzyl alcohol which may cause gasping syndrome. Safety for use in pregnancy has not been established. It diffuses across the placenta into the fetal circulation and appears in breast milk.
