Bananas Are The Best Energy Source for Athletes

Bananas Are The Best Energy Source for Athletes

Bananas are one of the favorite energy sources for athletes. Not only is it rich in carbohydrates as well as other nutrients, but also it is easily consumed whether by cyclists, runners, or athletes generally.

Bananas are one of the favorite energy sources for athletes. Not only is it rich in carbohydrates as well as other nutrients, but also it is easily consumed whether by cyclists, runners, or athletes generally.

Studies and researches still find new benefits for bananas. A research by the Appalachian State University proves that a banana is better than any carbohydrates sports drink.

This research, conducted at Appalachian State University’s Human Performance Lab, aimed at proving that carbohydrates can be gained from healthy, natural sources rather than energy drinks, and that it can boost athletes’ performance during intense exercise. “We wanted to see which was more beneficial when consumed during intense cycling – bananas or a carbohydrate sports drink,” said Dr. David C. Nieman, director of the human performance lab and a member of the College of Health Sciences faculty at Appalachian.

“I think there are a lot of athletes who don’t like the thought of drinking carbohydrate sports drinks, which are essentially flavored sugar water,” he added.

The research, published in PloS ONE, included 14 male cyclists (ages 18–45). Subjects were given either a glass of a sugar-based energy drink or a banana repeatedly every 15 minutes over a period of 150-180 minutes which is the approximate time to finish a 75 Km cycling course. More than 100 blood samples, taken before and after the race, were compared at the Appalachian State University’s labs.

Results found that bananas are better than energy drinks. High performance is only one advantage for bananas over energy drinks. Bananas are rich in fibers, Vitamins B6 and C, phosphorus, manganese. Bananas are also very rich in antioxidants, which help protect human cells from oxidation and damage due to exposure to ultraviolet rays, smoking, pollution and tissue inflammation Other studies have also found that consuming enough antioxidants can boost the effects of the immune system and therefore decrease the risk for developing heart disease as well as some cancer types and early aging.

A recent study, published in General Dentistry, has found that energy drinks can have severe, irreversible damage on teeth especially in teenagers and young adults.

Athletes are advised to take bananas instead of energy drinks. Not only do they boost their performance but also they are a cost effective energy source that can be easily carried and consumed.
