Eat 40 Percent Less to Live 20 Years Longer, Scientists Claim

(epharmanews) – Dietary changes are often recommended to help people lose weight or for a healthier lifestyle. However, a new study shows that eating 40 percent less can prolong life for 20 years.

Researchers from the Institute of Health Ageing at University College London succeeded at prolonging the life span in both flies and mice by using drug treatment and a modified diet. They found that rats can lie for 20 or 30 percent longer if their diet was reduced by 40 percent. That 20 or 30 percent increase equals about 20 years of human life. The researchers have also lessened the effects of a mutation which can cause Alzheimer's.

These results, presented at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, are from a research that aims at developing a treatment for ageing and adding years or even decades to the lives of many organisms including yeast, worms, and fruit flies. The researchers found that genetic and environmental treatment can improve longevity without having any negative effects on humans’ health.

The researchers contend the treatments will also tackle age-related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegeneration.

Dr. Piper said: "We take the novel approach of viewing these chronic illnesses as being symptoms of a common underlying problem: ageing itself. If ageing can be treated, can we offset the diseases that come with it? It's not just about living longer, it's about living healthy."

Similar treatments can be applied in many organisms which indicates that research on these simple organisms can help find a treatment for ageing in humans. The scientists are also studying fruit flies, which share 60 per cent of human genes and age in a similar manner.

Dr. Piper concludes that this 10 years old field is “all theoretical at the moment”, and that “There is no timeline on when it could be used for humans.”
