Algae Extracts can Reduce HDL Levels

(epharmanews) – Extracts from algae may be essential in regulating heart disease, according to a new study from Wayne State University published in the Journal of Nutrition and Dietary Supplements.

The researchers administered ProAlgaZyme, a clear liquid, to animals and found that it can be more beneficial than tap water or any other processed water. It significantly increased levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is the same effect usually gained from exercise and healthy diets.

This research explores the effects of increasing levels of HDL (good cholesterol) which can carry cholesterol out of the arterial wall, while medications that control high plasma cholesterol levels mainly work by reducing levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or bad cholesterol.

“The cholesterol mechanism is crucial to heart disease,” said Smiti Gupta, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of nutrition and food science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

“Very few agents increase good cholesterol, but we found that this algae extract does. The ratio of total to HDL cholesterol improved significantly. This result, if replicated in humans, would be consistent with a decreased risk of heart disease.”

The researchers found that in addition to raising HDL levels, ProAlgaZyme changed the expression of genes responsible for the reverse cholesterol transport mechanism. Gupta said other research suggests a similar outcome in humans although the researchers do not know how exactly it will function in humans.

“Its biological effect over time and toxic effects, if any, need to be further investigated in a long-term study in an animal model before testing its effects in humans,” she said. “But this is a step in the right direction, since increased HDL is considered an important therapeutic target for improvement of the lipid profile and thus reduction of the risk for cardiovascular disease.”
