A Tie May Exist Between Vitamin D and Heart Disease Via Genes

A Tie May Exist Between Vitamin D and Heart Disease Via Genes

The possibility of a genetic link between vitamin D and heart disease has been suggested by new research. This study has found that people with high blood pressure who had a gene variant that reduces the activation of vitamin D in the body to be twice as likely to have congestive heart failure than those without the variant.

According to the researchers, this finding may lead to a way to identify people at increased risk of heart disease. The genetic profiles of 617 people were analyzed in this research. One-third served as healthy controls, one-third had hypertension, and the other remaining third had hypertension and congestive heart failure.

The researchers found that in people with hypertension, a variant in the CYP27B1 gene was associated with congestive heart failure. The study was published in the 2009 November issue of the Pharmacogenomics journal. The conversion of vitamin D into an active hormone is reduced by mutations that inactivate the gene, according to previous research.

The researchers have said that this study is the first indication of a genetic link between heart disease and the action of vitamin D. In the future, people most vulnerable to heart failure could be screened earlier and the progression of the disease could be slowed in case subsequent studies confirm this finding and demonstrate a mechanism.
